Increasing evidence shows that proper vitamin D levels, either from absorbing enough sunlight or through supplements, could reduce asthma symptoms and severity among those individuals with inadequate vitamin D levels.
The Busselton Healthy Aging Study measured the serum vitamin D levels and lunch function and respiratory symptoms in more than 5,000 baby boomers. The research found that low vitamin D levels were associated with respiratory illnesses, such as bronchitis, wheezing, asthma, and chest tightness. Its findings proved that vitamin D deficiency played a role in the respiratory health of middle-aged adults. Further investigations also discovered that low lung function (Forced Vital Capacity or FVC) was increasingly related to low levels of vitamin D. On the flip side, higher levels of vitamin D were known to promote better lung function, which suggests that this particular nutrient is essential in promoting and maintaining good respiratory health.
Other factors considered in this study were seasonal fluctuations, obesity, and other chronic diseases. Even after these considerations, the effect of vitamin D on respiratory health remained consistent with the initial findings.
Vitamin D and Your Oral Health
Maintain your oral health by brushing and flossing regularly and visiting the dentist at least twice a year. But, there’s another aspect of keeping your teeth and gums healthy – getting enough vitamin D. This essential nutrient protects against tooth decay, gum disease, and promotes healthy bones. If you are unsure of your vitamin D levels, you should consult with your primary physician for testing. A simple blood test can determine your vitamin D levels and whether you could benefit from taking supplements. It is not recommended to start a new supplement without first seeing a doctor.
